If you’re struggling to lose weight, there is more to it than food and exercise. To lose weight, you have to make a commitment with your mind, body, and spirit and never give up.

  1. Create a vision board or put pictures of yourself or someone else that you want to look like on your fridge.
  2. Write in your journal why you’d like to lose weight and what this would mean for you and your family. How would your life be different? Write. it. all. out. Pour. your. heart. out.
  3. Each morning when you wake up, before you rush out to brush your teeth. Sit for a second or lay in your bed and think about what you’re grateful for. Set intention for the day. For ex., Today I intend to be more loving towards myself and others.
  4. Set a calorie budget and track your calories using apps like MyFitnessPal. We tend to underestimate how much calories we’re consuming. If you don’t measure it, you have no proof. Our minds make excuses and make us think we’re not eating that much.
  5. Eat when you’re hungry. Eat smaller meals throughout the day versus three big meals. Before you reach for the snack, think about why you’re grabbing that snack. If it’s due to a stressful emotion, grab a glass of water instead.
  6. Shop local and save! Shop at local farmers markets for produce, eggs, and other fresh foods. When shopping for groceries shop in the perimeter – or go around the store avoiding the aisle where packaged food resides. Focus on eating more plants.
  7. Swap simple carbs such as white breads, cereals, white rice and pasta, for complex carbs like whole wheat, whole grains, quinoa, brown rice, and oats.
  8. Portion your snacks into one serving at a time. Be prepared and carry your snacks wherever you go. Bring them to work, on weekend errands, kid’s events, etc. It’ll reduce the chance you’ll end up at a fast food joint.
  9. Cook dinners at home. Make it fun. Find ways to enjoy cooking at home. Plus you’ll save lots of money!
  10. Watch how much oil you use when you cook – oils are high in calories. Same goes with dressing on your salad.
  11. Master meal planning. Prepare foods on the weekend for faster and easier weekday cooking. For example, chop up vegetables and put them in storage containers in fridge.
  12. Try a mostly plant-based diet by getting more of your nutrients from vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, and grains.
  13. Cut soda out and instead replace it with water with lemon or lime.
  14. Don’t eat fried foods; if you crave potatoes, cut them up and bake them in the oven.
  15. Give yourself permission for a daily treat but have one serving of it. But enjoy. every. bite. of. it. Mine is chocolate covered almonds. Yumo!
  16. Each night before you go to bed, thank your body for doing all the things our bodies allow us to do. Your body is there for you. Learn to love it now.
  17. At mealtime, just focus on what you’re eating and don’t multitask. No phone. No distractions. Be present fully. Eat slowly and savor your food.
  18. Take a 30-minute walk after dinner. Walking burns calories and it will help your body digest the food better versus sitting on the couch.
  19. Do some form of exercise 3-5 times per week. Track your exercise in MyFitnessPal – it will give you more calories to work with for meals.
  20. Try fasting for 16 hours, for example finish your dinner at 7 pm and eat breakfast at 11 am. For some people fasting helps them kick start weight loss as well as digestion and provides more energy.
  21. Vary your workouts – do weight lifting and strength training 2-3 times per week and cardio 3-5 days per week.
  22. Find your tribe and love them hard. You need support to live a healthy lifestyle – support within your family, friends and community. You can find online groups on Facebook or if you’re part of a gym, you can find and join their online group.

Make a commitment to yourself for your health. You are your biggest investment. Do not downplay what you’re doing to others. Watch your words, thoughts, and mindset. Keep going and stay positive. When it gets tough, read positive affirmations or create your own positive affirmations so you can remember how far you have come and to never give up. You never know who’s watching and who you are inspiring.
